Mount Kailash via Hilsa

Mount Kailash, situated in the Kailash Range, is in the western part of the Tibetan Plateau, on the borders of China, Nepal and India. Situated at an altitude of 6,714 m (22,028 ft), it is located close to Lake Manasarovar and Lake Rakshatal. Four religions: Buddhism, Bon, Jainism, and Hinduism all regard Mount Kailash as sacred.

According to Hindu mythology, it is recognized as the abode of Lord Shiva, who resided there with his consort Goddess Parvati and their children. The journey to Kailash and Manasarovar is arduous, often requiring trekking through rugged terrain and enduring high altitudes. Despite the challenges, pilgrims undertake this journey to seek spiritual enlightenment, perform religious rituals, and cleanse their souls. The circumambulation (kora) of Mount Kailash and the ritual bathing in Lake Manasarovar are central elements of this sacred pilgrimage, symbolizing the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

“Conventional wisdom says a single circuit of Mt. Kailash wipes out the sins of a lifetime, 108 Parikramas guarantee enlightenment. A sip from the holy Mansarovar Lake absolves sins of countless lifetimes and transports pilgrims to paradise of Brahma.”
