Nepal is a country in South Asia between India and China. Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, and the Himalayan mountains are in Nepal. 8 of the highest mountain peaks in the world are in Nepal. It is also the birthplace of Buddha. It has recently become a secular country, but previously it was the only Hindu kingdom in the world. Nepal is a very important place of pilgrimage for both Hindus and Buddhists. Bhutan’s rugged mountains and dense forests long rendered it almost inaccessible to the outside world, and the country’s rulers reinforced this isolation by banning foreigners until well into the 20th century. The Tibet Autonomous Region is located in the southwest part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It borders on Sichuan and Yunnan provinces to the east, Qinghai and Xinjiang to the north, and shares borders with India, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Burma to the south, and bounded by Kashmir to the west.
Buddhism is the second major religion in Nepal, spreading since the reign of Ashoka through Indian and Tibetan missionaries.
